Does Allegiant Do Justice to the Divergent Series?

Most people say no.

Allegiant Part 1 hit theaters Friday March 18, 2016 and was expected to be an immediate hit due to the success of both prior movies, Divergent and Insurgent. However, this was not the case. The final time for Allegiant came in at just over 2 hours, a far cry from the almost 3 hour movies preceding it. The plot also does not follow that of the book at all, and that deviation is what contributes most to Allegiant’s downfall. Furthermore, on Rotten Tomatoes, the long-awaited movie scored only a 12%, and on Metacritic, a 33%. Not only did critics decide Allegiant to be subpar at best, so did viewers.

Sami Sorid (’18) states, “[Allegiant] was really all over the place and didn’t seem to have a clear plot. Some things just didn’t make sense whatsoever.”

Allegiant “Part 2” is due to come out in June of 2017, and will be called Ascendant. Ever a fan of the books, I plan to give the final movie a chance, but I don’t have high hopes.
