National Latin Exam

National Latin Exam

The National Latin Exam (NLE) is a yearly academic exam meant to examine students’ comprehension of the Latin language and Roman civilization. Organized by the American Classical League, this examination involves students who participate all over the United States and other parts of the globe each year. It is not only intended to test grammar and vocabulary knowledge but also to develop interest and appreciation for the classics of ancient civilization.

The exam is offered at different levels of difficulty, starting with introductory Latin and up to upper-level Latin, such as Latin V and Latin VI courses. At each level, there are multiple-choice questions that test students’ comprehension of Latin readings, translations, derivatives (words based on Latin roots in English), as well as cultural aspects of the subject.

One feature of the National Latin Exam is the awarding process associated with the exam. Awards such as gold, silver, and bronze medals as well as certificates of accomplishment may be won by the candidates participating in the exam. Additionally, high-performing students may qualify for scholarships or special honors from classical organizations.

So, why should students at Lenape High School be encouraged to take the National Latin Exam?

First, the exam acts as a bridge between classroom knowledge and application, offering a competitive context for students to reinforce their skills. Rather than simply memorizing vocabulary, students actively interpret and analyze the language, strengthening important comprehension skills.

Second, taking the exam will help students with not only language skills but also important literacy skills. Through engagement with figures such as Achilles, students will be able to analyze themes and character archetypes that help build analytical skills that students use on standardized tests like the SAT.

Finally, there are real rewards for your success. Through the awarding process, students can get recognition for their hard work. No matter what medal you have been awarded, this exam helps guarantee you stand out from other students on college applications, and some colleges even award scholarships for learning this classical language.
